  • REL3194- The Holocaust

  • ENV1001- Intro to Env. Science

  • CCJ4694- Human Trafficking

  • WST4115- Gender Violence and the Law: Global Perspectives

-The first three courses above influenced my decision to pursue a minor in Religious Studies. During my Religious Studies, I realized how integrated the world is with Religion. I learned that religion is a social, economic, and political matter; It affects the decisions we make.

- The Holocaust course had an impact on my life. We were exposed to literature and videos that showed the terror that transpired on people who did not commit a crime but lived in their truth. Six million Jews lost their lives during an unimaginable time. We must continue to educate our youth so that such events are prevented and dealt with. The Holocaust course inspired me to learn more and complete the Holocaust and Genocide certification.

Praying towards Mecca

In my REL2011 course, my group and I were required to visit a place of worship, a mosque, for our given religion, Islam. I was a bit apprehensive to attend worship I was unfamiliar with, but really enjoyed the experience. Although it was uncomfortable at first, it was educational. Unfortunately, people have created a stigma around Islam. People believe the religion orders violence and terrorist attacks. We must realize that individuals wrongfully interpret the words of religions to justify their own motives. At the mosque, I saw devoted men teaching their sons discipline and giving them guidance. Aside from our visitation, we were required to create a powerpoint on our experience, linked on the corner of the first picture. Also, we interviewed a Muslim woman and asked about her experience within the religion. She was proud to be a Muslim, despite the stigma. She noted, "Stereotypes of extremist groups should not be placed upon every one of Islamic faith or any faith." I learned that we must first experience to understand other religions, cultures, and traditions.

In my REL3194 course, The Holocaust, we had the privilege of attending events. Florida International University had its 3rd Annual Holocaust and Genocide Awareness Week. I had the opportunity to attend a meeting with one of the youngest Holocaust survivors alive. Allan Hall was 4 years old when the Nazis occupied his home, Cracow. He spoke of his survival story and the effects of the Holocaust. As a Psychology major, my main interest was the coping process during and after the Holocaust. Mr.Hall and his mother lived in a closet for 2 years below the Nazi Air Force headquarters. One cannot imagine the fear he and his mother endured on a daily basis.

WST4115: GENDER VIOLENCE & THE LAW

According to Kaufman, the act of violence is many things at once. It can be defined in terms of men acting out relations of sexual power and includes the violence of a society in which there is a hierarchical, authoritarian, sexist, racist system. Particularly, the violence is exhibited by an individual man to an individual woman. Our society has created an image of what a man should be. A man is equivalent to power and activeness, while women are equivalent to passiveness and powerlessness. To combat or deny passiveness, men use aggression to show their dominance and power. To hear a woman's claim of gender violence means to deny the complacency of sex-based states quo for men; It forces men to rethink gender roles learned as kids. According to Kaufman, there is a triad of violence which includes violence against women, violence against other men, and violence against oneself (men). Each corner is directly related to the other.
